Choose for an active family holiday in one of the most pristine places in Europe: the lakes of beautiful Värmland in Sweden.

Explore nature from a Canadian canoe and participate in adventurous bushcraft activities with Dutch-speaking guidance that will take you and your family to the essence of being outdoors and together.

The canoe trip in Sweden

Each day you'll paddle between 10 and 20 kilometers. This is manageable for 1 adult and 1 child (from 8 years old) in a canoe. If there's a third person, an extra seat can be added to the canoe. If you want, you can always shorten or extend the route for a more sporty experience.

Throughout the week, various activities are organized: whittling, treasure hunts, campfire making, baking bread over an open fire, and more.

Young children will learn about the wilderness, animals, the land, and the northern lights in the Canoe Tribe Totem Book. For the competitive spirits, there are also challenges to do with the whole family during your holiday in Sweden.

Are you kayaking with 3 people in a kayak? Keep in mind that there will be a bit less space for luggage.

Transportation

If flying is preferred, this is possible via Oslo Gardermoen airport. It's easiest to rent a car at the airport to get to the basecamp. Another option is to take the Flixbus to Årjäng and then book the shuttle to the basecamp from there.

Accommodations

During the canoe trip, you'll sleep at our basecamp and have spots for wild camping in nature. This way, you can enjoy a few days with sanitary facilities, and on other days, you'll go back to basics with just a dry toilet nearby.

All accommodations during the trip are included in the base price. If you'd like to spend an extra night at the basecamp the night before the trip starts or after your three-day trip, that's possible. You'll pay €12 per person for this, and you can select it while booking.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is this adventure for?

Canoe Tribe is a canoe adventure, specially designed for families. Here are a few important things to keep in mind:

  • Paddling can be tough, so we have a minimum age of 8 years.
  • An extra seat can be added to the canoe for a third person. Maximum one seat per canoe.
  • There must always be at least one adult in each canoe.
  • For families of 4, where at least one child is old enough to paddle, we can provide a kayak.
What camping gear should I bring?

If you join Canoe Tribe, all canoeing equipment is included in the price. You'll need to provide your own camping gear. Make sure your tent is as small and lightweight as possible so it can easily fit in the canoe. The smaller the tent, the easier it is to find a flat spot to set it up during your trip.

Don't have camping gear? No problem, you can also rent it from us for €70 per person.

The camping package includes:

  • A fresh & black popup tent for 2 people
  • 1 sleeping mat per person
  • 1 sleeping bag per person
  • 1 liner (inner sleeping bag) per person

When booking, select the option for everyone who needs camping gear. You'll receive one tent for every two people.

Can my dog come along?

We love animals! So your dog is more than welcome to join us on this canoe trip. You don't need to inform us in advance.

However, your dog must always be kept on a leash while at the campsite and in nature.

We also strongly recommend bringing a life jacket for your dog, as we only have life jackets available for people.

Can I join Canoe Tribe as a single-parent family?

Absolutely, single-parent families are welcome at Canoe Tribe. It's important that there is at least one child aged 8 or older to paddle along. Are you unsure if the trip is suitable for your family situation? Send an email to info@canoetribe.com and we’ll be happy to help you out.

What insurance options can I add?

During the booking process, you can choose to add two different types of insurance to your booking.

Cancellation Insurance

If you book early, you will temporarily receive our Superflex Cancellation Insurance for free. This allows you to change or cancel your booking for free until April 1, 2026, without having to provide a reason. You will receive a full refund for your trip (excluding cancellation insurance costs).

Of course, cancellations can also happen last minute. Do you want to be fully covered until the moment of departure? Then choose our regular cancellation insurance (€59 per person) during the booking process.

Find all the terms and conditions of our cancellation insurance here

Travel Assistance Insurance

Want to travel worry-free? Don't forget to add travel assistance insurance to your booking. In case of illness, breakdown, or theft, our travel insurance will help you out (€49).
You can find the policy conditions here.

Where can I park?

Parking is available at the base camp. There are a limited number of spots where you can safely leave your car. A parking pass for a week costs €70, and for three days, it's €30.

What time can I check-in and check-out?

On Sunday or Tuesday, you will arrive at the Canoe Tribe base camp for the week trip. Check-in is available between 10 AM and 12 PM. The next day, you can head out on the water whenever it suits you. Please keep in mind that the campsite must be vacated by 10 AM at check-out.

Did you book the midweek or the weekend? Then the extensive briefing starts on Monday or Friday at exactly 9 AM. During booking, you can choose an extra overnight stay before and after the trip, so you'll be fresh and ready for the briefing.

Is there entertainment?

Regular activities are organized for children and teenagers by our own Canoe Tribe crew. Think of nature explorations, sports activities, crafting moments, and fun games around the campfire.

Adults can also join in on the activities regularly, as it's even more fun to do it together.

What about sanitation facilities?

On the nights you stay at the base camp, you have access to sanitation facilities. On the nights you go wild camping, there is a dry toilet available. You can shower in the lake!

What do I need to bring?

We've put together a handy packing list where you can find all the essentials. Check out the packing list here.

How much luggage can I take with me?

During the trip, there is no luggage transport. All luggage will go with you in the canoe.

Try to pack as lightly as possible and really limit yourself to the essentials, so you can be sure everything fits in the canoe. In the packing list, you'll see exactly what you need to bring. Expect a maximum of 15 kilos of regular luggage per person. This does not include your food and camping gear.

Make sure to have light and compact camping gear, as it’s easy to carry and will help you find a suitable camping spot.

How do I know where I need to sail to?

Our rangers create a fun route for each day. You can easily find this in the Travelbase app. Here, you'll also see where you are located on the route.

Need some extra energy? You can regularly extend the route with an extra loop, or go a bit less far if you're tired. Of course, you can also map out your own route using the map.

Is there cell phone reception on the water?

Throughout the area, you generally have phone reception, but not always at the base camp. So you can always reach the rangers in case of emergency or just call home every now and then. Just make sure to bring a good power bank, because you won’t have access to electricity to charge your phone during your trek.

Offsetting CO2 emissions

Give back to nature via Greentripper

The planet gives us so much beauty to admire, but if we want to continue enjoying it for a long time, we need to protect it today. That's why we make extra efforts to minimize the impact of our trips, and in the booking form, you can reliably offset the CO2 emissions of your trip throughGreentripper.

By contributing to their certified climate project "Wildlife Cambodia", you help protect beautiful forests and their wildlife, support local communities, and plant enough trees to convert the equivalent of your CO2 emissions into oxygen. If you choose CO2 offsetting, Travelbase will also offset the emissions on-site, and you will receive an official carbon credit certificate after your trip.

Can I do this trip without kids as well?

Canoe Tribe is truly focused on families, and the program is tailored for that. The distances have been adjusted, and activities are organized for the kids.

For families without children, friends, and couples, we have another fun canoe trip: The Canoe Trip.

Are we sailing in a group or just with the family?

Canoe Tribe is an independent adventure, which means you'll experience the trip mainly with your family. Throughout the journey, there are moments when all the families come together for fun activities. Even while camping, many families choose to visit each other, but that's not mandatory. If you prefer to find a spot just with your own family, that's totally fine too. The paddling is done independently, without a guide. The rangers are ready to help from the base camp in case of emergencies, and you'll find routes and information about the area in the app.
