New in 2025: The Family Canoe Trip!

For kids and adults alike, experience 7 days of family adventure, combining nature and exploration! Discover Sweden and its wild nature, paddle on lakes, take part in activities suited for both little and big adventurers, and create unforgettable memories in the great outdoors.

The concept

Taking a trip back to your roots, The Family Canoe Trip invites you on an adventure in the heart of Värmland-Nordmarken, a region where children are the true explorers. Discover preserved places together, away from the beaten path, and reconnect with what matters most: nature

Your odyssey begins at the base camp with a comprehensive briefing that will perfectly prepare you for the start of the adventure:  understand the route, master your canoe, know the equipment, and ensure your safety. Join in on activities that spark curiosity, learn bushcraft techniques, and end your days around a campfire, roasting marshmallows and sharing your adventure moments.

Our on-site team, available 24/7, ensures your experience is unforgettable every step of the way!

On the agenda

Every day, you paddle between 10 and 20 kilometers. No worries, it's a manageable and accessible distance for families with children from 8 years old. Younger kids under 8 are also welcome, but from 8 years old, we consider them ready to paddle! If needed, an extra seat can be added, allowing for a third person. Our route remains flexible: you can choose to paddle leisurely or take on a challenge, every kilometer will be experienced at your own pace.

The days are built around simple and authentic activities: wood carving with branches collected on-site, treasure hunts in the forest, techniques for starting a campfire, bread baked directly on the coals, and more.

All the necessary canoeing equipment for your adventure will be provided. Wondering what you need to bring? We've put together a packing list that summarizes all the essentials for your trip.

Transport

By car
The base camp for the Family Canoe Trip is located at Outpost North, by the water, near the Swedish village of Bengtsfors.

This densely wooded region, in the heart of nature, features a vast network of lakes and rivers. It's the perfect spot for a canoeing adventure.

From Belgium, you can expect about 16 to 19 hours of driving to reach Outpost North. We recommend taking the ferry between Puttgarden and Rødby.

Address:
Kråkviken Lindekullen
666 93 Gustavsfors

By plane
If you prefer to travel by plane, Oslo Gardermoen airport is an option. The easiest way is to rent a car at the airport to reach the base camp. Another option is to take a Flixbus to Årjäng and then book a shuttle to the base camp.

Nuitées

Nights during the Family Canoe Trip
During your canoe adventure, some nights will be spent at our base camp and others in wild camping areas. On certain days, you'll enjoy the camp's sanitary facilities, while on other days, you'll get back to basics with only dry toilets nearby.

Frequently asked questions

Here you will find the answers to most of your questions. Is your question not among them? Send us an email at info@lecanoetrip.com and we’ll be happy to help you.

For whom is this adventure?

The Family Canoe Trip is an adventure designed specifically for families. Here are a few points to keep in mind:

  • Paddling can be tiring, which is why we have a minimum age of 8 years.
  • An extra seat can be added in the canoe for a third person. A maximum of one seat per canoe.
  • There must always be at least one adult in each canoe.
  • For families of 4 people, with at least one child old enough to paddle, we can arrange a kayak.
Can my dog come?

We love animals! So your dog is welcome for this canoe adventure. You don't need to let us know in advance. However, at the base camp and in nature, your dog must always be on a leash. We also strongly recommend bringing a life jacket for your dog, as we only provide them for humans.

What insurance can I add to my booking?

When making a reservation, you have the option to add two types of insurance:

  • Cancellation Insurance: If you book early, we temporarily offer the Superflex Cancellation Insurance for free. You can cancel or change your reservation without reason until April 1, 2025. You will then receive a full refund (excluding the cancellation insurance fee).
  • Travel Insurance: For a worry-free trip, consider adding Travel Insurance to your reservation. In case of illness, breakdown, or theft, our insurance will assist you (€49).
What time can I arrive and leave?

Registration takes place between 10 AM and 12 PM. The next day, you can head out on the water at your chosen time. Please note that the base camp must be vacated before 10 AM at the time of your departure. You can choose to add an extra night before or after your stay to fully recharge.

What about the restrooms?

At the base camp, you have access to restrooms. During the bivouac, there are no restrooms, which means a more natural way of managing things. We kindly ask you to place your used toilet paper in a garbage bag. This bag can then be dropped off at the base camp. This method helps us preserve nature by keeping it as clean as possible.

What camping gear should I bring?

All canoe-related equipment is included in the price. For the camping, you'll need to bring your own gear. Make sure your tent is small and lightweight so you can easily transport it in the canoe. The smaller it is, the easier it will be to find a flat spot to set it up.

If you don't have your own gear, you can rent it from us for €70 per person, which includes:

  • A Fresh & Black tent for 2 people
  • A sleeping pad per person
  • A sleeping bag per person
  • A liner (inner sleeping bag) per person.
Can I participate alone with my children?

Of course! Single-parent families are also welcome. However, at least one child must be 8 years old or older to be able to paddle. If you have any doubts about whether the activity is suitable for your family situation, feel free to email us at info@lecanoetrip.com and we’ll be happy to advise you.

Where can I park my car?

Parking is free at the base camp. There are a limited number of spaces where you can safely park your car.

Are there any animations/activities?

Activities are regularly organized for children and teenagers by our Canoe Trip team. This includes nature explorations, sports activities, crafting moments, and games around the campfire. Adults can also join in on the activities because it's always more fun with a group.

What should I bring?

We have prepared a practical gear list (packing list) with all the essential items to bring. Check out the list here.

How much luggage can I bring?

There is no luggage transport during this adventure. You must take all your luggage with you in the canoe. Try to travel light and limit yourself to the essentials so everything fits in the canoe. On average, plan for about 15 kg of luggage per person, plus food and camping gear. Make sure you have lightweight and compact camping equipment, so it's easy to carry and you can find a good spot to camp.

Does the network work on the water?

Throughout the region, you'll have cell service to use your phone, except maybe at the base camp. If needed, you can always contact the guides or call your loved ones. Don't forget to bring a good power bank, as you won't have access to electricity during the trip.

Can I take this trip without children?

The Family Canoe Trip is a new offering primarily designed for families, and our program is tailored for this purpose. The distances are moderate, and activities are organized for the kids. If you don't have children, we also offer two other options: The 7-Day Canoe Trip or The 3-Day Canoe Trip.

Comment savoir où je dois pagayer ?

Our guides create a beautiful route every day, which you can easily check in the Travelbase app. You'll also be able to see exactly where you are on the route at all times. If you still have some energy, you can extend your route with a detour, or shorten it if you're feeling tired. You can also map out your own path from the map.

What should I bring?

We have a handy list (packing list) with everything you need to bring. Check out the list here.
